Targeted Grazing and Prescribed Fire Workshop
Meewasin and the Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange is hosting a 2-day workshop regarding targeted grazing and prescribed fire monitoring. The workshop will be held at Beaver Creek Conservation Area, south of Saskatoon on Highway 219, on September 11 and 12th. The workshop includes classroom sessions each morning with field tours and hands-on learning in the afternoon. Workshop includes lunches each day, supper on the Monday evening, and transportation to the field tour sites on the Monday afternoon.
Monday will focus on prescribed fire with tours at Beaver Creek Conservation Area, Northeast Swale and Kernen Prairie where recent prescribed fires were conducted to control woody encroachment including creeping juniper, western snowberry, wolf willow and trembling aspen and also habitat enhancement for species at risk and biodiversity. Tuesday will focus on targeted grazing with the field component looking at targeted grazing projects at Beaver Creek Conservation Area for fuel reduction, woody shrub encroachment, and species at risk habitat enhancement. The classroom sessions each morning will cover the why’s and how’s of targeted grazing and prescribed fire, and also information on the various monitoring techniques to measure the impact of the management activity.
Registration is $100 (plus fees) and covers 2 lunches, 1 supper, transportation, drinks and snacks. Deadline for registration is September 6th.
