Welcome to Saskatchewan PCAP

The Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan (SK-PCAP) is an action-oriented plan driven by a diverse partnership chaired by the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA). The Partnership consists of 27 groups representing industry, multi-sector federal and provincial agencies and non-government organizations, and SK’s two universities. The Vision of SK-PCAP Partners is that the native prairie be sustained in a healthy state in which natural and human values are respected.

Formalized as a partnership in 1998, the SK PCAP has subsequently developed two five-year Action Plans. The 1998-2003 SK-PCAP effectively addressed shortfalls identified in the 1989-1994 national PCAP. In 2004 we were awarded with the Countryside Canada Award, administered by Wildlife Habitat Canada and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, for accomplishments related to our 1998-2003 PCAP. Saskatchewan’s 2003-2008 Plan renewed Partner commitments and Goals carried forward from our 1998-2003 Plan, which was successful in advancing progress on many of its actions. Our 2003-2008 Plan consists of 78 Actions and 25 Objectives that are tied to our 5 Goals:
  • Goal 1: Sustain a Healthy Native Prairie Grazing Resource
  • Goal 2: Conserve the Remaining Native Prairie
  • Goal 3: Maintain Native Prairie Biological Diversity
  • Goal 4: Promote Complementary Sustainable Uses of Native Prairie
  • Goal 5: Increase Awareness and Understanding of Native Prairie and its Values
One of the most important features of the SK-PCAP is its detailed implementation schedule which provides information on lead and support Partners, relative to each action, and timelines for delivery. Progress is tracked annually and our 6th Partner Update will soon be available in pdf format on our website.

The SK-PCAPs primary purpose, and most important role, is to facilitate communication among its 27 Partner groups. Our forum has been effective in reducing duplication, increasing coordination and addressing gaps in programming, as well as guiding the development of programs and policies that reward sustainable use and promote ecological health and integrity. The SK PCAP is regarded as a model of an effective grassland conservation partnership. In October 2005, a diverse grassland partnership, modeled after the SK-PCAP, was announced in Chihuahua, Mexico aimed at protecting several key Chihuahuan Desert portfolio sites.
