Engaging Rural Clients - Workshop Resource
The following information was compiled to supply the Engaging Rural Clients workshop (2005, 2006, 2007) participants with resources in the form of web links for courses, supplementary papers, publications and on line tools. Presentations from the 2005, 2006, and 2007 workshops are also available. This information is for use by individuals in technology transfer, extension and outreach areas and will help resource professionals build capacity and skills to work more effectively with producers and rural clients.

A. Academic/Scientific Papers
Journal of Agricultural Education and Extension
This international journal is based in the Netherlands and published quarterly. It publishes articles focusing on empirical research, new methodological approaches, theoretical developments, and policy issues related to agricultural extension. Website abstracts can be viewed for issues from January 96 to present, and full articles can be viewed for issues from April 94 to March 96.
This USA based journal is published bimonthly. The website contains full articles from 1985 to present. The focus is broader than just agriculture. However, there is a search engine which can be used to locate articles specific to a topic.
University of Guelph, Rural Extension Studies
This site contains a number of good papers on technology transfer issues in rural Canada. Look for Future Options and Prospects in Rural Extension and Technology Transfer. 1987. Harold R. Baker. B. Broad Based Technology Transfer Skill Development
This site lists a number of publications that can ordered dealing with a broad range of topics including effective presentations, meetings, committees, and building community support. Some of these publications are available on-line.
The Rural Store, Victoria, Australia
This company sells many publications that deal specifically with rural technology transfer issues. A list of these publications can be viewed under the Communications sections of their website.
This is an excellent resource, providing great tips on everything from how to deal with reporters, write a communications plan, or organize an effective meeting, etc.
Extension Handbook: Processes and Practices,
Donald J. Blackburn, Editor, University of Guelph, 1984, 230 pages.
This handbook, written by over 20 of the world's leading figures in adult education, contains comprehensive information on how to do extension work at the rural level. Available in bookstores.

The Canadian Style (on line writing /grammar resource)
The Canadian Style gives concise answers to questions concerning writing and editing tools in the Canadian context. It covers such topics as punctuation marks, hyphenation, spelling and frequently misused or confused words. It deals with letters, memos and report formats, notes, indexes and bibliographies, and Canadian geographical names.

This ‘On-Farm Testing’ fact sheet for Manitoba provides information on how to conduct on farm tests. While the focus is on agriculture, it could be applied to water quality issues, especially those that relate to agricultural management.
Guide to Better On-Farm Demonstrations, Saskatchewan Agriculture Development Fund. This booklet is similar to the above, except it also includes sections on other forms of communication such as field days, newsletters, media, and displays. Out of print but may be available in libraries.
I. School Education Focus
Designed in a similar way to the more well known, Project WILD, this school resource is one of the more popular tools for teaching water related issues to students. A Canadian version of this resource can be accessed from the above site.
Agriculture in the Classroom is an international movement, supported by the agricultural industry. This Canadian site provides links to provincial sites, which contain many school resources.
